Find an Accessible Toilet in London

Adapted toilet facilities have improved in London.

Increasingly, restaurants, cafés, pubs, shopping areas, hotels, museums, attractions and stations have accessible loos. If you're not a customer of the business, it's up to the service provider whether they'll let you use the lavatory.
Accessible Toilets – National Key Scheme
There are thousands of public toilets in the capital that are accessible to disabled people.

Many are accessible through the National Key Scheme (NKS). The principle behind the NKS is, if local authorities and other organisations decide to lock toilets in order to prevent misuse, they should use a standard lock.

There are 900 toilets in the NKS in Greater London. The Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilition (RADAR) maintains a list of toilets in the scheme, this is published annually in the National Key Scheme Guide. Keys and copies of the guide are available from RADAR; there is a small charge (£3.50) for a key.

For further information visit RADAR's website.

Accessible Toilets At London Stations
Accessible toilets can be found in most mainline rail stations in London.

For visitors travelling around the capital by Tube, Transport for London have a comprehensive map that shows which underground stations have toilets and what facilities are available at each one. Ask for a map at any underground station or download the map on the Transport for London website.

Open London Scheme
As part of his commitment to improve the quality of life in London, the Mayor launched the Open London scheme in 2009. The scheme set out to increase access to toilets across London by asking businesses to open up their toilets for public use.

A number of major retailers – Asda, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's and Tesco – agreed to let people use their customer toilets without having to make a purchase. Other accessible toilets can be found in places such as Tourist Information Centres, fast food restaurants, some pubs and restaurants and many of London's major tourist attractions.

Inclusive London
Inclusive London is an online nationwide access register to buildings, venues and services. Inclusive London’s listings are compiled from Access Audits, guided telephone access assessments, information supplied by the businesses listed and user-contributed information.

Visit the Inclusive London website for comprehensive access information on accessible toilets in London.

TOILET MAP: ONLINE HELP FOR THOSE CAUGHT SHORT

An online website to guide New Zealanders to the nearest public toilet locations and an accompanying iPhone application were two of the announcements at the launch at Parliament for Crohn's and Colitis New Zealand Charitable Trust (CCNZ) on 29 July 2010. For patients with these conditions, finding the nearest toilet can be a critical issue. Speaking about the condition, Christchurch-based board member Claire Worsfold, who has Crohn's disease, says frequency of going to the toilet, weight loss, and reports of abdominal pain are important signs of the disease. The CCNZ website www.toiletmap.co.nz is intended for people living with Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis but is also a great resource for anybody (eg, travellers, parents with young children needing a nappy change facility). The map provides basic details of facilities in over 1000 public loos across the country, and the new mobile apps use existing mapping and GPS technology.

Find nearby public toilets wherever you are in the world!

Search for public toilets around your current location using the GPS built-in to your iPhone, or look for conveniences around your destination via a simple place name or postcode search (this works for iPod Touches too). Don't waste time trying to find your way to the loo either, as once you've selected your nearest toilet this app will guide you directly to it with a customised route map! All you have to do is hold it until you get there!

We've got tens of thousands of WC's all over the world in this app and near complete coverage throughout Australia, however we're always on the lookout for more. So if you see a public toilet and it's not listed then tell us about it! You can do this directly in the app and we'll submit it to the OpenStreetMap project to help other people from being caught short, wherever in the world they live - even if they are not using our app. We want this data to be made as widely available as possible!

Find Toilets uses the built in GPS on the iPhone to get your current location, but can also locate an iPod Touch in built-up WiFi areas. If your location cannot be determined automatically then you can always enter your town or post code to get started. Please note that an internet connection is required to get location and map data. Australian public toilet data is copyright Commonwealth of Australia and is provided by the Department of Health and Ageing's National Public Toilet Map project. Additional and rest of world data is provided by OpenStreetMap and all edits are submitted back to this project too.
